kindred (mothering) spirits

One of the beautiful and surprising things I’ve discovered since I began to write this blog is the many kindred spirits to be found in the blogosphere.

Whether it’s comments from faithful readers or links from fellow bloggers, I have come to treasure the connections that this space has let me make. And today I get to celebrate one of those connection in a lovely way.

When I first happened upon Ginny’s blog at Random Acts of Momness, I felt I had found a diamond in the rough. Here was a true mothering spirit, someone else who loved to write and muse about the connections between faith and family life. Then when I realized hers was also a byline regularly carried by our diocesan paper, I was even more impressed that this kindred spirit was an Actual Published Author. (Yes, I am still totally geeked out by this kind of stuff.)

So when Ginny asked me to write a guest post for her series on “The Best Gift My Mom Gave Me,” I was delighted to contribute. Not only because it’s a wonderful question and a chance to celebrate the most influential mothering spirit in my life. But also because it will hopefully lead all of you to check out her blog and her writing as well.

No matter what our work in the world, we need kindred spirits to carry us along the way. Anne of Green Gables was absolutely right.

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It’s splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”

  1. Rarely does one begin the commenting on their own blog, but my husband (whom I have dubbed the “phantom commenter” for his habit of telling me over dinner what he WOULD have said in response to a post, were he not a stubborn lurker) mocked me this morning for the Anne of Green Gables quote. And I refuse to believe I am alone in loving dear Anne, even after all these years – right?

  2. I’m touched and honored by your lovely words here, Laura — thank you so much. And thank you again for “introducing” us all to your fabulous mother!

P.S. You are NOT alone in loving Anne! That’s just one more way in which you and I are kindred spirits (though as a child, I actually identified a bit more with Emily of New Moon than with Anne … perhaps because she had dark hair?!?!).

  3. You guys made me watch Anne of Green Gables allll the time growing up and I cringe at the memories, so, yes, I agree with your wise husband that no one else likes it. Awesome article, though!

  4. LOVE Anne. Dave and your husband are wrong! I even know a couple guys who enjoy the Anne series (including my hubby), though they rarely admit it publicly.

Thanks for the Elizabeth Mitchell link! I just bought three of her albums. I like to play a CD for my 7-week old as he falls asleep (he likes a degree of noise as he sleeps) and her stuff is wonderful.

    • I agree that they are sorely misguided! (Even if a large part of my love for the TV version was due to the handsome face of Gilbert Blythe…)

I hope you enjoy the music – I can’t get enough of her mellow voice!
